When I started out playing solo gigs in London, I discovered an open mic night where I could go to try out new material.

It was run by a collective called Raison D’etre, and Steph Dray was their photographer. When I got my 1st band together ( WINSTON ) Steph was always there capturing some memorable moments.
Our relationship developed, since I was using a lot of her photos for my website. We began to talk about ideas for images and where we would like to shoot. My life as a hobo was becoming more of a reality, traveling a lot, so our first shoot was on a train track.

We were pleased with the result and from there we found the inspiration to go further afield, doing shoots in Berlin, Paris as well as London which provided images for both my albums “Make Way” and “Hobo”.

Now that the album Hobo is having such a success we are taking our collaboration to the next step by working on a book, as well as a DVD.

I enjoy working with Steph because she has an astute sense of capturing people character in her images and is very inspired by theatre, like me. She draws out the imaginative world of her subjects while not compromising on their depth.

In 2003, I was at Raison d’Etre nights in a small basement when I saw a man with a beard (he didn’t wear the hat at this time) doing some beat boxing. I was struck by his energy.
Within a minute, he had the all place at the palm of his hand. Then after his performance, he disappeared. Oh no, I didn’t hear his name …
For 3 months I kept asking Healer Selecta of Raison d’Etre what was the name of this young chap who had so much charisma, but seeing lots of bands and artists at his night he didn’t recall his name either. Then one day I was shooting at my studio and when I went downstairs to have tea, I saw him. I literally jumped on him and he told me he had a gig here that night that I couldn’t go unfortunately. I told him to contact Raison d’Etre and two weeks later, I saw him singing for the first time. Straight away, I felt in love with his music, and knew he would go far. That day after his performance, I asked him if he could be my photographic project and since then, we have been working together and become good friends. I am his personal photographer which I still enjoy doing after six years as Charlie is a full box of creativity and spontaneity.
His outlook of life, his music always inspires me as an artist.
